"...Except those captives whom your right hand possesses"

Kuran Sura 4, Ayat 24 says:

And all married women (are forbidden unto you) save those (captives) whom your right hands possess...

Now this means that a Muslim is allowed to have sex with his female slaves. That is well known and understood. But it is not widely known under what circumstances this verse was "revealed" by Muhammad. To understand this, one has to read the Hadith. The Hadith often contain the exact historical event that prompted the "revelation" of a Kuranic verse. Let us look into the Hadith to see why this verse was needed.

I produce below the relevant Hadith.

Abu Dawud vol.2 no.2150 p.577

Abu Sai’d al-Khudri said : The Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) sent a military expedition to Awtas on the occasion of the battle of Hunain. They met their enemy and fought with them. They defeated them and took them captives. Some of the Companions of the Apostle of Allah (may peace be upon him) were reluctant to have intercourse with the female captives in the presence of their husbands who were unbelievers. So Allah, the Exalted, sent down the Qur’anic verse: (Sura 4:24) "And all married women (are forbidden) unto you except those captives whom your right hands possess." That is to say, captive women are lawful for them when they complete their menstrual period.(1479)"

Hadith Jami At-Tirmidhi 3016

Abu Sa’eed Al-Khudri said: “On the Day of Awtas, we captured some women who had husbands among the idolaters. So some of the men disliked that, so Allah, Most High, revealed: ‘And women already married, except those whom your right hands possess . . . . [4:24]’”

Now take a look at these Hadith. It is clear what is happening. The muslims have captured some idolators - both men and women. Some of the captured women are married to men who are also among those captured. As was the custom during Muhammad's campaigns, all captured women became the sexual property of his soldiers. However, some soldiers were reluctant to rape the captured women in front of their husbands. That is when Muhammad produced Kuran 4:24 assuring them that it was permissible to rape these captured women even in front of their husbands.

Now tell me - what kind of person was Muhammad? What kind of a person asks his soldiers to let go of any conscience and just enjoy captured idolatrous women in front of their husbands?

When one reads the Muslim accounts of how the defeated royal Hindu families were treated, it is exactly as per these Hadith. Every single evil that Islam committed in India is directly from the Kuran and Hadith.
